Parent-and-child swim classes in Renton, Washington
Guppy is a small swim school beside a family studio. Classes start at three months, an adult is in the water with every child, and the first class is a gentle one.

Your baby's first class
Every class follows the same shape, so a first class feels like the second.
Come a few minutes early. Shoes go in the cubbies, and you and your baby rinse at the showers before the pool.
You get in by the steps, where the water is shallow and warm. The instructor is on the step beside you and shows you how to hold your baby.
For 30 minutes we sing, float with support, splash and move through the water together. If your baby has had enough, we get out and try another day.
Wrap up in a towel and sit down in the studio beside the pool for a quiet minute before you head home.
Five age stages
Classes follow your child's age, from three months to four years. The instructor suggests where to start at your first class and when to move up.
Being held chest to chest in warm water
Gentle pours of water over the shoulders
Floating on the back with the grown-up's hands for support
Songs with a steady beat
When your baby sits up steadily and reaches for toys in the water, the instructor suggests Sitters and crawlers.
Sitting on the step and splashing
Reaching for floating toys
Blowing bubbles with the grown-up
Moving from one grown-up to another along the step
When your child pulls up to stand at the pool edge and likes to walk along the step, the instructor suggests Walkers.
Walking in the shallow water, holding hands
Pouring and filling with cups
Kicking while the grown-up holds a kickboard
Going down the steps with a grown-up
When your child is steady walking in the water and likes to kick while you hold their hands, the instructor suggests Toddlers.
Kicking on the front and back with support
Floating with the grown-up's hands under the back
Reaching for the wall
Blowing bubbles and putting the face in the water
When floating with support and reaching for the wall are steady, the instructor suggests Preschoolers.
Kicking across the shallow end with the grown-up beside
Floating on the front and back with light support
Getting in from the pool edge with a grown-up's hands
Listening for the instructor's cue and taking turns
When your child is ready for a class without a grown-up in the water, the instructor talks it through with you.

The series
Parent-and-child classes run in six-week series. Every class is 30 minutes, with the same instructor at the same time each week.
One parent-and-child class each week for six weeks, on the same day and at the same time.
Two classes each week for six weeks, on two days when there is room, with a Saturday morning if you like.
The pool and the studio
The pool is shallow and warm, with wide steps to sit on and a ramp for strollers and carriers. Next door, the family studio has chairs, a low table and a window onto the water, for the minutes before and after class.
Wide steps to sit on
Shoes in the cubbies, towels on the hooks
A bench by the glass for anyone watching

“I was nervous about my first time in the water with a baby. The instructor walked us through each step before we got in, and we stayed on the step until we were ready.”
“Same day, same time, same instructor every week. My son knows the songs now, and I know where to put my hands.”
“The pool is warm, the studio next door has somewhere to sit and wrap up after class, and the front desk answers our texts the same day.”

Families sign in at the front desk, rinse at the showers and wait on the bench until the instructor waves everyone to the steps.
A grown-up stays within reach of every child at the pool, before and after class as well as in it. Nothing replaces adult supervision.
Phones stay in the bag at the pool, so both of your hands are free for your child.
If your child is unwell, call us and we will find a make-up. If the pool closes, we text and email families and make the class up in the same series or credit it to the next.
